11th Annual Association of Pacific Rim Universities Doctoral Students Conference

“Research for the Sustainability of Civilizations: Past, Present and Future”

 

 

We are pleased to announce that the 11th Annual Association of Pacific Rim Universities Doctoral Students Conference (APRU DSC) will take place from July 12 to 16, 2010 at the Central Library - Crystal of Knowledge, Universitas Indonesia (UI). Universitas Indonesia’s Organizing Committee for the Conference is now calling for papers to be presented at the 11th APRU DSC. Doctoral students from all disciplines are invited to attend and present papers related to their doctoral research and based on the conference theme: “Research for the Sustainability of Civilizations: Past, Present and Future.”  The theme will be further subdivided into 5 focal areas: Social, Economic and Cultural Policy; Climate Change and Sustainability Development; Spirituality and Identity; Technology; and Health.

 

Our goal is to highlight the importance of research on the sustainability of civilizations and to provide a platform whereby doctoral students from across the Pacific Rim can share their research efforts and specific experiences and network with a culturally diverse group of participants.

 

The conference will comprise of:

  1. Paper sessions
  2. Guest lectures
  3. Visits to selected institutions
  4. Special workshop
  5. Bali Island Tour (optional)

 

Papers Sessions

 

The paper presentations will be arranged according to focal areas to enable participants from different fields to engage in cross-disciplinary discussions.

Sustainability Development and Cultural Practices; Climate Change; Population; Food Security; Marine Resources and Water Management; Energy and Environment

 

  1. Spirituality and Identity

Faith Based Organizations; Spirituality and Religion; Fundamentalism and Cultural Citizenship; Diaspora, Modernity, Secularism

 

  1. Technology

ICT; Bio Technology; Technology Consumption; Technology and Society; Green Technology; Network Society

 

  1. Health

Infectious Diseases; Herbal Medicine; Nutrition

 

Papers are expected to be drawn from all academic disciplines including, but not limited to,    the following:

 

anthropology, archaeology, arts, biology, business, chemistry, commerce, computer science, earth sciences, economics, education, engineering, health care, history, information technology, international relations, law, life sciences, linguistics, literature, mathematics, medicine, philosophy, psychology, physics, political science, and sociology.

 

Participants can write papers on other research areas in addition to those listed above in accordance with the conference theme.

 

Guest Lectures

 

Guest professors and speakers will be invited to share their thoughts and experiences relevant to the conference theme. These, combined with site visits are expected to build up materials for discussions in a special workshop.

 

Special Workshop

 

The objectives of the special workshop are to: 1) strengthen the network among doctoral students, 2) cultivate a better understanding of the conference themeResearch for the Sustainability of Civilization: Past, Present and Future” and 3) set directions for in-depth discussions among doctoral students and draw conclusions based on the lessons learned from the exchange of ideas.

 

All participants are expected to attend the special workshop and contribute their personal viewpoints to a lively discussion.

The special workshop will be conducted in two parts:

 

-      The beginning of the conference (July 12th)

On the first day of the conference, participants will be grouped based on their research areas. These groups will consist of 12-13 participants to discuss issues of the sustainability of civilizations in each research area. Each group should elect a leader for their group discussions. This workshop will be led and coordinated by the Chair of the DSC Organizing Committee together with the Doctoral Students Network (DSN) Executive Committee and the rest of UI Organizing Committee. It is hoped that participants will engage in active discussions and reflections throughout the conference, either during lunch time, or in the evenings.

 

-      The closing of the conference (July 16th)

On the last day of the conference, the leaders of each group will sit on a panel and make brief presentations on the conclusions of their group discussions. Each will have 5 minutes for presentation. This workshop will be led by the Chair of DSC Organizing Committee and the Chair of DSN Executive Committee. A discussion will follow after the presentations.

 

We hope that this special workshop will give a more comprehensive understanding of the conference theme, encourage friendship and broaden participants’ perspectives.

 

Site visits

 

Site visits combined with Q & A sessions during the visits are expected to build up materials for the discussion at the special workshop.

 

The UI Organizing Committee has tentatively arranged site visits to the following places:

1.            Salihara Community- Arts, literature and culture community (www.salihara.org )

2.            Bank of Indonesia and Museum

3.            Institute for Human Virology and Cancer Biology (www.ihvcb-ui.org) and Eijkman  Institute for Molecular Biology, Universitas Indonesia (www.eijkman.go.id)

Bali Island Tour

 

The UI Organizing Committee has arranged an optional trip after the conference to the famous Bali Island - the Land of God, at a special negotiated price. A minimum of 20 participants are needed for a guided tour. Please indicate your option for this cultural field trip when you register online. Payment information for the optional trip will be available on the DSC website, http://www.aprudsc-2010.ui.ac.id/.

 

The official language of the conference is English. Abstracts, paper presentations and all conference materials will be in English. Approximately 125 doctoral students will be selected to present papers. The program committee will review papers on the “first-come, first-served” basis. The program committee has the right not to review incoming papers should the quota be met.

 

Guidelines on:

 

Session Organization:

1.       Each session is arranged as follows;

-          Session duration: 90 minutes

-          Optimal number of paper presentations: 3

-          Session format: presentation of individual papers followed by discussion and Q & A.

-          Presentation duration: not exceeding 20 minutes for each paper.

 

2.       The program committee will select proposed papers and will arrange the sessions accordingly.

 

3.       The sessions will be arranged according to focal areas. This will enable participants from different disciplines to share ideas and to have a deeper understanding of the conference theme.

 

Acceptance of Abstracts:

 

1.       Abstracts and any accompanying papers should be submitted in English using the Online Registration System at http://www.aprudsc-2010.ui.ac.id/.

 

2.       Each abstract should contain a description of the paper not exceeding 250 words, and should include the title, author’s name, institutional affiliation, nationality, discipline and at least 1 but not more than 5 keywords. The keywords are designed to provide a guide to the areas/issues covered by the paper, and will be used by the UI Organizing Committee to allocate papers to appropriate sessions.

 

3.       If there is more than one author, the name of the person who will present the paper at the DSC should be clearly indicated in the abstract.

·     In principle, the person presenting the paper must be a doctoral student enrolled at a university that is a member of the Association of Pacific Rim Universities (APRU) at the time the abstract is submitted.

 

 

 

 

·     However, the UI Organizing Committee will allow a small number of doctoral students enrolled at universities that are not members of APRU to present their papers at the DSC. In this case, the papers should have some connection to the Asia-Pacific region, and the students must provide a letter of recommendation from a member of the faculty or department in which they are enrolled.

 

4.       If the total number of submissions exceeds 125, the UI Organizing Committee reserves the right to screen abstracts on the basis of their quality, taking into account the balance in presentations across countries, universities, and disciplines.

 

5.       It should be noted that participation in the 11th APRU DSC is subject to the acceptance of abstracts by the UI Organizing Committee.

 

6.       UI Organizing Committee will send e-mail notification for the acceptance directly to the participants.

 

Registration:

 

All participants should register online at http://www.aprudsc-2010.ui.ac.id/, after receiving e-mail notification of the acceptance for their abstract submission.

 

Key Dates for the 11th DSC:

 

· 26 February 2010               :      Deadline of online submission of abstract

(not exceeding 250 words)

·    23 April 2010          :      Notification of acceptance of abstracts

·    7 May 2010           :      Deadline for online registration

·    11 June 2010                            :      Deadline for submission of full papers

·    12 – 16 July 2010    :      The 11th DSC at Universitas Indonesia

Please indicate your name and passport number clearly on the online registration for room reservations.

 

Local transportation:

 

Universitas Indonesia will provide airport transfers and transportation during the conference based on the schedule. Please indicate your airline’s name, flight number, and time of arrival and departure in your online registration.

 

Financial Support:

 

-          Successful applicants will be provided with roundtrip airport transfers, transfers to and from the hotel and UI campus, free accommodation (twin-sharing) for 5 (five) nights (July 11-15, 2010) and some meals.

-          UI will only cover the accommodation of the leading author of each paper; co-writers could attend the conference but should pay for their own hotel expenses.

-          Mini bars, local and international calls, laundry, and other incidental charges will be at participants’ own expenses. 

-          No registration fees will be charged for the 11th APRU DSC.

-          Participants should pay their fee for the optional cultural field trip to Bali.
